What is a Licensed Professional Engineer?

A licensed professional engineer is an engineer that holds a bachelor degree in engineering, has successfully completed a series of examinations, and has at least 4 years of acceptable engineering work experience. The bachelor degree must be from an ABET or CEAB accredited program, or be able to show possession of an equivalent educational background. The examinations include the Fundamentals of Engineering (FE) and the Professional Engineer (PE) Exams. The work experience must have taken place after graduation and must be verified by five persons (3 of which must be licensed engineers). The National Council of Examiners for Engineering and Surveying (NCEES) sets up the licensing requirements. For general information on Professional Registration throughout the United States, visit the General Information about Professional Engineering Registration web site.

How do I take the exams, and what should I expect?

The exams are offered only twice a year. To take the exams in Michigan, form MI11 must be submitted. For the FE exam (or repeats for the PE exam), the form must be in by March 1 for the April exam and by September 1 for the October exam. For the PE Exam, for new applicants, the form must be in by January 1 for the April exam, and by July 1 for the October exam.
