EGR 680 Musical Fountain Project
|
Project Summary This musical fountain was designed by undergraduate students enrolled in engineering at the Padnos School of Engineering at Grand Valley State University. It was done in three weeks as a project for EGR 680: Design of Electrical Control Systems and Power Electronics. The fountain consists of a base containing the lights, water pump, valves, speakers, and other electrical controls. The fountain is controlled by the user via a keyboard of proximity sensors. The PLC controls lights, fountain valves, and audio tones. A tone generator circuit controls a signal mixing and generation for the speaker. Water is stored in a resorvoir and dispersed to create a water and light show. The basin is constructed of polycarbonate and has four water jets, eight input sensors and the audio tone generator circuitry. On this page you will find all of our design files related to this project as well as images taken during its construction and operation. Team Members David M. Huhn Kristofor S. Koorndyk Cynthia N. Top provides a three-view representation of the polycarbonate top constructed for our fountain. This image includes dimensions. Top detail is just a top view of our fountain. Although it does not contain dimensions, it provides a more complete view of our fountain including electrical sensor and nozzle positioning. Frame provides a 3D representation of the frame of the base constructed out of 2"x4"s. Base_top is a top view of the wooden base. Each circuit is shown as a separate worksheet in the file. All of the components were available for order through Digikey. bom.xls [20 KB] Wiring Diagram A wiring diagram for our fountain is provided below in PNG format. Click below to download it. wiring.png [26 KB] wiring2.png [27 KB] Code At the core of our Musical Fountain is an Allen Bradley PLC 5. Code was developed for it using RSLogix Software developed by Rockwell Software. Click below to download the final, commented revision of our code: fountain.rsp [252 KB] Circuit Boards Circuit schematics and board layouts are provided below for all three of the boards that were designed for this project. Both the schematic and board layout were done in Eagle, a free program for circuit creation. Schematics are available Eagle format and in image format as PNG files. The layouts are available as Eagle files. From these board files Eagle can generate gerber files which can then be used for PCB construction.
