The Beauty and the Beast of Golf

Tom Kite and John Daly, two of the Professional Golfer’s Association’s (PGA) best golfers both
rake in the money, yet, they both are very different from each other.  In watching these two players, you can see a noticeable difference in their playing styles and their attitudes.  These two very different styles may be a product of the way they were trained.
Tom was brought up in a household of five brothers and sisters where the money was scarce and quiet time was even more scarce.  Getting away from all the siblings, Tom found solitude and peace taking his junior set of golf clubs and hopping the fence to a nearby golf course.  Here he spent hours a day just chipping and putting on the greens.  From this practice he developed a precise shortgame.  John, however, was an only child living in a family of great wealth.  His father took him golfing whenever he wanted at the country club and quickly caught on to the game.  Playing with friends, he inevitably tried to develop a huge drive to outshow his friends, the farther the better.  These long drive contests took away from his shortgame, however, his extreme length made up for his shortgame
The demeanor of these two players is also far from the same on the golf course.  Tom is a quiet man of 45 years and very modest in his golf skills.  People will never see a shoe or golf club commercial with Tom Kite, he has no use to show off his skills.  Throughout a whole tournament, Tom will never have any more expression than a simple smile on his face.  If he misses a putt, he just shakes his head and smiles at his error.  Playing strictly by the rules, he will never cheat intentionally.  John on the other hand has already been caught for cheating; he received a one month suspension from the PGA.  Where Tom is quiet, John will yell and swear to himself at a missed putt.  An errant tee-shot once lead John to throw his club into the air, which is considered the worst of manners on a golf course.  John is a loud and obnoxious man of 28 years has been on many commercials boasting of his extremely long length.  He is constantly looking for people to notice him, and he does draw a lot of attention, good and bad, from spectators and fellow PGA members.
Tom and John’s playing styles are just as opposite as their demeanor.  Tom, being a conservative (defensive) player, on a par five will hit a driver, five-iron, wedge onto the green, and one-putt for a birdie four.  John, however, is an offensive player and with all his might will hit driver, two-iron onto the green, and two-putt for the same birdie four.  These two styles accomplish the same thing but in very different ways.  Whenever Tom is faced with a par-three hole, he will shoot to the fat part of the green (the largest part of the green), just hoping to make a one- or two-putt from there.  This style is safe because he won’t go flying off the green.  John, on the other hand, will try to hit the ball into the hole on one shot.  Because most holes are very near the edge of the green, you must have a precise shot and if John is off a little bit, the ball could end up off the green.
These two men, John Daly and Tom Kite, have very different backgrounds, games, and attitudes on the golf course.  Tom is conservative and modest; the beauty of the game.   John is radical with quite an ego issue; the beast of the game.    Their differences are great and similarities are few, however, they both love the game of golf.  They are both on the PGA to play for the people, fame, and money of the game.  Though they differ in many aspects, they produce the same scores, and win their far share of tournaments.
