These are pictures and recordings of the participants in the Sounds of Music C event at the 2002 Regional Michigan Science Olympiad, held at Grand Valley State University on March 23, 2002. The co-ordinators for this event were John Bender and Andrew Sterian.
Each team of 2 students was required to construct two musical instruments using only non-instrument parts. They were required to discuss the theory behind the construction and sound production of the instruments, and to play a short excerpt of "Ode to Joy" as well as a longer piece of their own choosing.
The recordings are available in both uncompressed WAV and Ogg Vorbis compressed format. The recordings are very quiet, you will have to increase the playback volume to its maximum level (headphones work best). The Ogg Vorbis compression is fairly aggressive (85 kb/s), in order to minimize file size, hence you should download the WAV files if you want a cleaner sound.
Thumbnails of the instruments are shown below. Click on a thumbnail to see a larger version of the picture.
